Another tip: you can save time by making a pattern swatch in Illustrator, instead of lining a whole bunch of them up yourself. Select the shape you want to repeat (make sure it's all grouped together, and text is expanded into outlines), and go to Edit>Define Pattern... Your pattern will now be in your swatches palette. It's easier to have it in the color you want when you define it than to change it later. Also, you can define anything as a pattern...but anything that isn't proportional to a square will make a pattern with extra space in it.

very nice technique. i am hoping to create some variation of background pattern this way that will help my 'futuristic / time travel ' vis id.
